Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is cancer that begins in the cells of the breast, most often in the milk ducts or lobules. When found early, it is highly treatable.
Overview
Breast cancer can present in many ways. The most common first sign is a painless lump, but it can also show as a change in breast size, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or redness. Early evaluation is important because many breast changes are not cancer.
Common Symptoms
- A painless lump or thickening
- A change in breast size or shape
- Skin dimpling (like orange peel)
- Nipple discharge or inversion
- Redness of the breast skin
Causes & Risk Factors
- Risk increases with age and family history
- Inherited gene changes such as BRCA1/2
- Earlier age at first period, having children later or not at all
- Obesity and alcohol use
- Many people diagnosed have no strong risk factors at all
When to See a Doctor
- Any new lump, skin or nipple change
- Persistent breast pain should be evaluated without delay
- Early evaluation does not mean it is cancer, but it is the only way to know for sure
Treatment Approach
Treatment depends entirely on the type and stage found on evaluation, and can include surgery and/or referral for further oncology treatment. The priority is prompt, unhurried evaluation and a clear next step.

Frequently asked questions
Is breast cancer always painful?
No. A painless lump is the most common first sign. Any new breast change should be checked, even if there is no pain.
What happens at the first breast evaluation?
The doctor takes a history, performs a clinical breast examination and arranges imaging such as ultrasound or mammogram if needed. A clear next step is planned based on the findings.
Does a family history of breast cancer mean I will get it?
Family history increases risk, but most people who develop breast cancer do not have a strong family history. Regular self-awareness and check-ups are important for everyone.
