Stomach Ulcer

A stomach ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), most often caused by H. pylori bacterial infection or long-term use of pain-relief medicines (NSAIDs).

Overview

Stomach ulcers are common and usually heal well with the right treatment. Most are caused by H. pylori infection or regular NSAID use. Surgery is only needed if complications such as bleeding or perforation occur.

Common Symptoms

  • Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen
  • Pain often worse on an empty stomach or at night
  • Bloating, nausea or loss of appetite

Causes & Risk Factors

  • H. pylori infection
  • Regular NSAID use such as ibuprofen
  • Smoking and excess alcohol can worsen risk

When to See a Doctor

  • Persistent upper-abdominal pain warrants evaluation and testing for H. pylori
  • Seek emergency care immediately for sharp sudden severe stomach pain, vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, or black/tarry stools
When to seek urgent care: If you have sharp sudden severe stomach pain, vomit blood or material resembling coffee grounds, or have black/tarry stools, seek emergency care immediately—these can signal a bleeding or perforated ulcer.

Treatment Approach

H. pylori-related ulcers are treated with a combination of antibiotics plus acid-reducing medication. NSAID-related ulcers are managed by stopping the medicine where possible and using acid suppressants to let the lining heal. Surgery is reserved for complications.

H. pylori is a bacterium that infects the stomach lining. It is a common cause of ulcers and can be detected with a breath, blood or stool test.

Can stress cause stomach ulcers?

Stress alone does not cause ulcers. The main causes are H. pylori infection and NSAID use. However, stress can worsen symptoms.

How long does an ulcer take to heal?

Most ulcers heal within a few weeks of treatment. H. pylori infections require a specific course of antibiotics and acid suppressants.
