Blood Sugar / HbA1c
Blood sugar and HbA1c tests measure current and three-month-average blood glucose. They are the core tests for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes.
What it measures
A blood sugar test measures glucose at the moment of testing. HbA1c reflects the average blood sugar level over the past two to three months.
Why it's ordered
These tests are used to diagnose diabetes, check how well diabetes is controlled, and guide treatment adjustments. They are also used to screen people at risk of diabetes.
What to expect
A small blood sample is taken. Fasting may be required for some blood sugar tests. HbA1c does not require fasting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between blood sugar and HbA1c?
Blood sugar shows the glucose level at the time of the test. HbA1c shows the average level over the past two to three months.
Do I need to fast before a blood sugar test?
Fasting blood sugar tests require 8–12 hours without food. HbA1c and random blood sugar tests do not require fasting.
How often should HbA1c be checked?
For people with diabetes, HbA1c is usually checked every three to six months. Those at risk may be screened less frequently.
