Liver Function Test (LFT)
A liver function test (LFT) measures liver enzymes and proteins to check for liver inflammation or damage.
What it measures
LFTs measure enzymes and proteins produced by the liver, such as ALT, AST, bilirubin and albumin. Abnormal levels can indicate liver inflammation or reduced liver function.
Why it's ordered
An LFT is ordered when there are symptoms of liver disease, when routine blood work shows raised liver enzymes, or as part of monitoring for people with diabetes, obesity or high cholesterol.
What to expect
A small blood sample is taken. Fasting is not usually required. Results are reviewed with the doctor to decide if further evaluation is needed.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean if liver enzymes are high?
Raised liver enzymes can indicate inflammation or irritation of the liver. The cause may be fatty liver, alcohol, medications, infection or other conditions, and needs further evaluation.
Do I need to fast for an LFT?
Fasting is not usually required for a liver function test unless it is combined with other tests.
Can fatty liver be detected with an LFT?
An LFT can suggest fatty liver when enzymes are raised, but imaging such as ultrasound may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.
