Lipid Profile
A lipid profile measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. It is used to assess heart disease and stroke risk.
What it measures
The test measures total cholesterol, HDL ('good') cholesterol, LDL ('bad') cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
Why it's ordered
A lipid profile helps estimate the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is often ordered for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity or a family history of heart disease.
What to expect
Fasting for 9–12 hours is usually required for accurate triglyceride measurement. A small blood sample is taken from the arm.

Frequently asked questions
What is HDL and LDL cholesterol?
HDL is often called 'good' cholesterol because it helps remove cholesterol from the blood vessels. LDL is often called 'bad' cholesterol because high levels can build up in arteries.
Do I need to fast for a lipid profile?
Yes, fasting for 9–12 hours is usually recommended, especially for accurate triglyceride measurement.
How often should cholesterol be checked?
Adults should have cholesterol checked at least every few years. People with risk factors or on treatment may need more frequent testing.
