Gall Bladder Stones

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, the small organ that stores bile for digestion. Many people have gallstones without ever knowing it.

Overview

Gallstones are common and often cause no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can be painful and recurrent. Symptomatic gallstones are typically treated with laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder, which is safe and well-tolerated.

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden pain in the upper right or centre abdomen, often after a fatty meal
  • Pain may spread to the back or shoulder blade
  • Nausea or vomiting

Causes & Risk Factors

  • More common with obesity, pregnancy and rapid weight loss
  • Family history and increasing age
  • More common in women

When to See a Doctor

  • Recurring upper-abdominal pain, especially after eating
  • Seek urgent care for pain with fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain that doesn't ease
When to seek urgent care: If you have gallstone pain with fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain that does not ease, seek urgent care immediately—these can indicate a blocked bile duct or gallbladder infection.

Treatment Approach

Silent gallstones found incidentally usually don't need treatment. Symptomatic gallstones are typically treated with laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy), after which the body manages fine without it.

Frequently asked questions

Do all gallstones need surgery?

No. Gallstones that cause no symptoms are usually left alone. Surgery is recommended when gallstones cause repeated pain, infection or complications.

Can you live without a gallbladder?

Yes. The gallbladder stores bile but is not essential for digestion. After removal, most people adjust quickly and can eat normally.

What foods trigger gallstone pain?

Fatty or fried foods are common triggers. A low-fat diet can reduce episodes until definitive treatment is planned.
