Thyroid Profile (TSH/T3/T4)

A thyroid profile measures thyroid hormone levels to check for an underactive or overactive thyroid.

What it measures

The profile typically measures TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), T3 and T4. Together these show whether the thyroid gland is underactive, overactive or functioning normally.

Why it's ordered

A thyroid profile is ordered when there are symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, weight change, heart-rate changes or neck swelling. It is also used to monitor thyroid treatment.

What to expect

A small blood sample is taken. Fasting is not required. Results are usually available quickly and reviewed during the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is TSH?

TSH is a hormone from the pituitary gland that tells the thyroid how much hormone to produce. High TSH usually means an underactive thyroid; low TSH may mean an overactive thyroid.

Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?

No, fasting is not required for a thyroid profile. However, some medications and supplements can affect results, so tell your doctor what you take.

How often should thyroid function be checked?

When starting or adjusting treatment, thyroid tests may be done every 6–8 weeks. Once stable, testing every 6–12 months is common.
